Happy Easter – the bunny laid an update egg!

Hi everybody!

What a kick arse start to the year. Last I updated we were about to start recording again. Whelp, that recording is getting close to completion now.  It’s going to be a very fun and very honest record.  I can’t wait to share it with you.  The release date is very much still pending, but I’ve posted some photos to whet your whistle.

Yeah. You saw correctly. Horns. Horns I tell’s ya!

While recording we also committed to the debut “Indie Monday” residency series put on by our friends at This City Live. Five Mondays at The Sister in March (even St. Patricks Day!!!) Some highlights include:

  • Playing a bunch of traditional Irish Tunes (Dirty Ol Town, Whiskey in the Jar, Tell My Ma etc)
  • Sharing the stage 2ce with Melanie Brulee! I joined her during her solo set singing “Strange Desire” and she joined the Power Trio for a version of “Lapin Blanc” (aka White Rabbit)
  • Invasion of the Smithereens! Alex Cuba brought his most recent touring band to Ontario and they stopped by to support our show on an off night. Alex’s band included Jake Jenne and Ian Olmstead whom I go waaaay back with (Ian was the drummer in my very first band). When we stopped by Not My Dog for an after show brewski the Alex Cuba trio even played a few tunes to close out the night. I split my face in half grinning!
  • Singing “Outwest Blues” with the Blind Cats, the lyrics of which are based on the Mip Power Trio’s 2011 Tour.

That’s just off of the top of my head.  Here’s some photos I ripped off of instagram:

On the last friday of March I had the rare pleasure of playing an acoustic set with my good friend Emilyn Stam at Not My Dog. Sometimes it’s nice to really get back to my roots and folk it up. Emilyn knows how to accompany the sh*t out of a song but she can also carry out a fiddle tune –from Irish to Cajun– in all it’s glory.

Already the month of April has had me play double duty (guitar for Mip and bass for Outbred Inlaws in the same night) 2ce in one week!  Once at the Sister for “Indie Monday” and once at Cherry Cola’s.   The word whirlwind springs to mind…and I’ll have to survive on that high for a while.  Things are slowing down for juuuuust a little bit.

UP NEXT

We’ll be playing The Atria in Oshawa on May 17 and we’ll be sharing the stage with Mel Brulee once again on May 27 at the Painted Lady (Toronto).

See you soon!

Love Mip and the Mip Power Trio
